Mr. McBEAN's income will not be increased by a salary of one thousand two hundred dollars per annum, Mr. McBEAN now, I believe, frequently employs the Sheriff's officer to assist him in his duties, and if many distraints for rent are applied for, it is certain that Mr. McBEAN will require assistance in the performance of his duties, and another Clerk and Usher will have to be appointed for the Summary Court.
With respect to paragraph No. 6, so far as it relates to amount of work done by the Court, I have looked through the records and find it very difficult from them to make up anything like an exact return. The return for 1879 seems specially inaccurate; 16 cases appear to have been tried in the higher jurisdiction, 4 to have been struck out, and
17 settled.
The cases heard, however, are not a fair criterion as to the amount of work done in the Court. Every Writ issued, Petition and Answers filed, give some amount of work. Many cases are never heard after giving a great deal of trouble, and unless the number and nature of applications in Chambers and motions in Court are taken into account, it is impossible to say what work is done. The Court fees give perhaps a better idea, as stamps are used now on every document. There were apparently 16 cases heard in 1880, 16 in 1881, and 10 settled, and 24 in 1882 up to the 30th June.
